Adoption Guidelines
Must be 21 years of age. Personal ID is required. (Drivers license preferred) Vehicle license plates will be recorded.

Adoption form = 4 pages
Adoption process = 30 - 40 minutes

Every adopted animal is required to be spayed or neutered.
There is a $35.00 fee for this at the NYS participating Veterinarian of your choice. Unless other arrangements are approved, any animal needing to be spayed or neutered must be picked up from the Veterinarian after surgery. The $35.00 fee is due at that time.

We cannot guarantee the health of any animal.
Many of them are strays and we have no record of their medical history. Therefore, it is required that you bring your adopted animal to a Veterinarian with five (5) days for a "medical check-up". This is your moral and financial responsibility.

No dog can leave the Humane Society Shelter without a license.
You may purchase a license from your local Town/Village Clerk or from the Town of German Flatts Clerk. We also recommend that you license or tag your cat according to your local animal control ordinances.

Puppies and kittens under four (4) months old will not be adopted into homes with children under five (5) years old.

There is a mandatory waiting period of at least 24 hours before final approval of any adoption. You references and application information will be verified. The Herkimer County Humane Society has the right to refuse any adoption application and is not required to provide an explanation.

If at any time and for any reason you cannot continue to properly care for your adopted pet, the pet must be returned to the Humane Society.

The Humane Society has the right to verify any adopted animal's welfare with "Home Visits".
