The
Community Action Network or C.A.N.
as it is commonly referred to, is a volunteer effort based in
communities throughout the County. It involves Herkimer County
Humane Society canisters placed in businesses for the
purpose of collecting donations from the public. A canister
is placed in a cooperating business by a volunteer or a Board
Member of the Humane Society and is collected when full by this
volunteer. A business who has volunteered to have a canister is
given recognition by the Humane Society in their newsletter, which
is mailed to all members and a message to encourage support of
these businesses.
On
the whole, the canister program has been successful.
A portion of these funds are alloted to our Humane Society
spay/neuter program. Since we are a non-profit organization
- not a County run agency, we depend almost entirely on
outside funds to keep us going. Therefore, the canisters
contribute significantly to the Humane Society revenues and are
a very important part of our fundraising effort.
Everyone
that places a canister in their business becomes an important
volunteer in our organization. Any business can participate
and we appreciate everyone who helps us in this endeavor.
